For
those that suffer from migraine headaches, it is an incredibly painful
experience and one that nobody wants repeated but unfortunately migraine
sufferers do not have a lot of choice in the matter. Imagine the worst headache
you could ever have in your life and then multiply the pain exponentially and
that is what migraine headaches feel like. To top it off, that is just one if
the many symptoms that associate themselves with this painful feeling.
Some
of the other feelings that you may find that you have that accompany migraine
headaches are nausea and then vomiting, blurred vision or deformed vision,
extreme pain behind the eyes or ears and dizziness.
Migraine
headaches affect 25% of people all over the world, and 15% of Americans. It is
generally well known for women to suffer from them more than men and they
generally tend to decrease as you get older but this is not always the case. You
are more likely to experience migraine headaches if they run in your family and
over half of all people that suffer from them have parents that have experienced
the same symptoms.
There
is no real scientific basis for the causes of migraines but they have been
linked to a number of triggers including certain foods, weather changes and
hormonal issues. They are classed as vascular headaches and they are so painful
because there are changes in the tone of the blood vessels within the brain.
Medication used to treat migraine headaches tend to focus more on relieving the
pain of them rather than treating the root cause as this can never quite be
determined. Doctors can give you prescription drugs to ease the pain associated
with migraine headaches and there are over the counter medicines that can be
purchased as well. More natural remedies have been making a breakthrough in
recent years, with aromatherapy, hypnosis and many other alternative methods
being used to battle the painful episodes.
Generally,
migraine headaches can last for as little as an hour or two and some have been
known to go for several days. For those that suffer from them, one of the
easiest ways to get through this difficult time is to lie in a dark room with no
noise or distractions around. Small noises from the television or radio or even
people talking can agitate these migraine headaches and the sufferer will
normally be rather irritable. Bright lights will appear to make them worse as
they put more pressure on the eyes and can make migraine headaches even worse.
If
you believe that you are suffering from migraine headaches your first step
should be to call your doctor as these symptoms could be caused by other medical
problems. Over the counter medicine can be taken to relive the pain, but
prescription medication will require a diagnosis from your doctor, and the
sooner you can get this diagnosis, the quicker you can get remedies for the pain
and the easier life will be, not only for the suffer of migraine headaches, but
also for those
who are around them.
